Veterinary Point-of-Care diagnostics: quick, easy and reliable

Animal Point-Of-Care diagnostics is a firmly established process in numerous veterinary settings including private clinics, veterinary medical centres, research facilities and government institutions. The high quality and reliability of POC-instruments enable practitioners to make informed therapeutic decisions instantly at the point of care.

The increasing willingness to invest in our pets' health combined with the rising demand for animal-derived food products foster a holistic approach to POCT within veterinary settings.

The anvajo fluidlab performs a variety of quantitative and semi-quantitative point-of-care tests for veterinary applications such as the measurement of urine sediment, reticulocytes and animal semen levels.

Urine sediment analysis

Microscopic examination of urine sediment is one of the most commonly performed and valued POC-tests in veterinary settings. It is carried out to screen for and monitor diseases and conditions such as urinary tract infections or kidney disorders within animals. The analysis identifies the presence or absence of anomalous components such as cells, crystals and casts in urine.

As techniques are not standardised and manual measurements can lead to inaccurate results, veterinarians struggle with the drawback of 'human error'. Technicians must be very precise and consistent when evaluating urine sediment. Each practice must strictly adhere to its protocols and standard operating procedures in order to ensure acceptable levels of accuracy and reliability when counting and classifying samples.

Automatic cell counting and cell classification is accurately performed by the fluidlab within seconds and therefore eliminates a time-consuming manual process for the veterinary technicians. Based on specific deep learning algorithms, the fluidlab provides reliable semi-quantitative measurements of cellular and non-cellular constituents such as leukocytes, erythrocytes, casts, epithelial cells and others cellular constituents.

Components of urine sediment

Erythrocytes

The integrated high-resolution microscope of the fluidlab detects and evaluates red blood cells (RBC) in urine and measures their levels semi-quantitatively. Increased cell numbers may occur due to inflammation, necrosis, haemorrhage or neoplasia along the urinary tract.

Leukocytes

White blood cells (WBC) in urine are reported semi-quantitatively. Increased numbers may indicate the presence of an inflammatory reaction along the urinary tract.

Epithelial Cells

The fluidlab system observes different types of epithelial cells in urine which are reported semi-quantitatively. Epithelial cells may increase with inflammation.

Crystals

Different types of crystals such as struvite, uric acid and phosphate crystals are in some cases common for healthy dogs and cats. These may be found in urine as well. Crystals are unambiguously classified by the fluidlab and reported semi-quantitatively.

Casts

Casts (cellular, hyaline or waxy casts) originate in the kidney and are most of the time a sign of renal disease. The differentiation of the casts is essential for a correct diagnosis.

Mobile semen analysis is highly precise and fast

The anvajo fluidlab is a high-precision diagnostic device that can be used for standardized semen analysis. The automatic analysis of sperm motility and ejaculate concentration can be performed on the spot within a few seconds. Assisted artificial insemination can be managed accurately and efficiently for a variety of animals and is suitable for a broad range of reproductive applications. The simple, digital data export of the analysis results along various different interfaces simplifies the data transfer for the user.
